We are deeply committed to helping as many people as possible move past the barriers of a criminal record. On January 22, 2025 we partnered with the NBA Social Justice Coalition, Smith Entertainment Group Foundation, Clean Slate Utah, and other community partners to host The Utah Expungement Summit.
The summit took place at the Delta Center, in downtown Salt Lake City, home of the Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club. The goal of the event was to highlight the vital role expungement plays in helping people rebuild their lives after involvement in the justice system. As a part of the event, the SEG Foundation and other partners sponsored free representation in more than 400 cases. All attendees at the event were given free access to our eligibility tool, the opportunity to meet with our experts or volunteer attorneys to discuss their record clearance options, and access to a resource fair with dozens of community partners and fair chance employers.

The Summit by the Numbers:
- 2,336 People Registered for the Summit: the turnout for this event was larger than anyone expected, emphasizing how common it is to have a criminal record and showing how much need there is for these services.
- 93 Volunteer Lawyers: Rasa trained almost 100 lawyers from the Utah Bar Association who volunteered their time to give free eligibility consults at the event.
- Free Representation in over 400 Cases: Thanks to the SEG Foundation and other sponsors, Rasa was able to provide free legal support in over 400 cases.
Engaging the Press:
We held a press conference and media interviews prior to the start of the event where key leaders spoke about why this work matters - underscoring the transformative impact of record clearance.

Celebrating Our Community Partners
Thanks to the organizing efforts of Clean Slate Utah, the summit also brought together many community partners, nonprofits, and fair chance hiring organizations who shared resources and opportunities with attendees. These groups worked side by side with volunteers to make the event a success. Their dedication to creating second chances and empowering individuals was inspiring.
From booths offering job opportunities to organizations sharing guidance on housing and education, every partner played a role in helping attendees build better futures at The Utah Expungement Summit. This collaboration showed just how much can be achieved when the whole community comes together to support those in need.

How Expungement Changes Lives
For many people, clearing a criminal record is life-changing. It opens the door to jobs, housing, and education that might have been out of reach before. At the summit, the excitement was clear as attendees learned about the possibilities waiting for them. Many shared stories of how a fresh start would help them provide for their families, pursue new goals, and rebuild their confidence.
This event wasn’t just about legal processes—it was about hope, opportunity, and a chance to move forward without being held back by past mistakes.
